A Brief History of the Alpaca

Dating back in time more than 2 million years ago, the camelid family, of which the alpaca is a member, has moved from North America to South America and Asia. After becoming extinct on the North American continent, they appeared as Guanaco and Vicuna in South America, the ancestors to present-day llamas and alpacas.

Vast herds roamed the Altiplano before the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors. But, because of their timid, gentle nature, they became easy prey and their numbers decreased to near extinction. Five hundred years later, they can be found once again in the United States as well as their original homes in Peru, Chili, and Bolivia. Added to that, countries like Australia, England, France and Japan are the forerunners to a world-wide spread.

Products made from the alpaca range from rugs and toys to haute couture.  The most common items are socks and mittens, hats, and of course, wonderful, warm, sweaters.

These animals are proven survivors, showing resilience in difficult circumstance. The current traits of an exceptional alpaca have been developed through the years to produce an animal that is highly desired for its warm, soft fleece and lovable disposition.
